The different types of irrigation: which one to choose?

Watering the World: A Guide to Irrigation Types
Irrigation is more than just "watering plants." It is the backbone of global food security and the science of managing one of our most precious resources: water. Depending on the terrain, the crop, and the climate, farmers choose different methods to ensure their plants thrive without wasting a drop. 
Here is a breakdown of the most common irrigation systems and where they work best.
1. Surface Irrigation
This is the oldest and most common form of irrigation worldwide. It relies entirely on gravity to move water across the land. 
  • How it works: Water is released at the top of a field and allowed to flow over the soil surface.
  • Sub-types:
    • Furrow: Small trenches (furrows) are dug between crop rows.
    • Flood: Entire flat fields are covered in water (common in rice paddies).
    • Basin: Water is contained within earthen ridges around trees or small plots.
  • Best for: Flat landscapes and clay-heavy soils that hold water well.
  • Common crops: Rice, corn, wheat, and orchards. 
2. Drip (Trickle) Irrigation
Drip irrigation is the gold standard for water efficiency. It delivers water directly to the plant's root zone, minimizing evaporation and runoff. 
  • How it works: A network of pipes and "emitters" drips water slowly onto the soil surface or directly into the root zone (Subsurface Drip).
  • Best for: Areas with water scarcity or high-value crops where precision is key.
  • Common crops: Grapes (vineyards), berries, tomatoes, and greenhouse vegetables. 
3. Sprinkler Irrigation 
Think of this as a giant, professional version of a lawn sprinkler. It mimics natural rainfall by breaking water into small droplets. 
  • How it works: Water is pumped through a pipe system and sprayed into the air through nozzles.
  • Sub-types:
    • Center Pivot: Large wheeled towers rotate around a central point, creating those distinct circular patterns you see from airplanes.
    • Lateral Move: The system moves in a straight line across a rectangular field.
  • Best for: Large, flat farms and sandy soils that absorb water quickly.
  • Common crops: Cereals, potatoes, and alfalfa. 
4. Sub-Irrigation
Instead of watering from above, this method raises the water table from below the plant roots. 
  • How it works: Water is introduced into the soil through a system of pumping stations and canals, allowing the soil to soak up moisture via capillary action.
  • Best for: Areas with naturally high water tables or muck soils.
  • Common crops: Commercial floriculture (flowers) and some field crops in specific peat-rich regions.
